FAQ
CARDINAL
Sundek is basically a colored concrete resurfacing material made of Portland Cement, silica sand with epoxy and acrylic bonding agents.
We generally apply Sundek on old concrete a little less than 1/4" thick, though it can be applied as thin as necessary, depending on the concrete.
Part of it is sprayed on with an Acoustic Sprayer and part of it is troweled.
It is a textured surface. The base coat, if necessary on old concrete, is installed as a smooth coat. After that is dry, a texture coat is sprayed out of an Acoustic Sprayer with material covering 70-80% of the base coat in small drops. These drops are then troweled smooth and are comfortable to walk on. A colored finish is then applied.
There are a variety of colors to choose from though we generally apply it in earth tones that are most pleasing to the landscaping area.
It has the life expectancy of concrete. Sundek is actually harder than concrete in PSI strength.
How long does it take to do a job?
From 3-5 days depending on whether it is new or old concrete, size of the job, etc. The base coat is allowed to dry. Then we apply the texture coat which dries in approximately 3 hours. Usually the following day we then apply the finish which dries in approximately 2 hours.
Does the pool have to be drained?
No, the pool must be full and the circulation system in operating order.
How do you treat control or expansion joints?
All existing joints should remain in place to allow for movement. They are not coated with Sundek and are masked off. We can, however, apply the Sundek finish coat to the joints so that they will match in color with Sundek. We replace any worn out control joints for a nominal fee.
Sundek is cooler than concrete.
No! Kool deck can only be applied to freshly poured concrete within 24 hours. Sundek can be applied to new or old concrete.
Will pool water stain or will Sundek fade?
No.
Can you correct drainage and low spots?
We can generally improve drainage, however the degree of success is contingent upon the pitch of the concrete adjacent to the low spot. The low spot will have to be looked at by an estimator to let know what you can expect.
How do you treat cracks in the concrete prior to the Sundek application?
Smaller cracks are filled with Sundek urethane. Larger cracks are filled with epoxy, welding the separated pieces of concrete together.
Though we do everything possible to treat cracks and eliminate 90% of them, it is possible that they may re-occur. Usually they come back as a hairline crack that is generally covered by the texture. If it is large enough to fill, we can repair t for you for a small service charge.
What if something happens to my deck after the warranty expires?
The material is repairable to its original state.
Do you apply the material to cantilever faces and coping stone?
Yes.
Can you put a different color on the coping stones than the rest of the deck?
Yes.
Sundek is guaranteed for 2 years against bond failure or chipping, flaking, and peeling.
How does the price of Sundek installation
compare with removing & replacing the concrete?
Sundek is about 20-25% the cost of removing & replacing concrete, and it looks
better than plain concrete.
Normal wash with a water hose. For a stubborn stain, use a brush with laundry detergent. We supply you with a touch-up jar.
Sundek can be applied to driveways, steps or walls.
